Still catching HOSP!

March 18, 2025

54 is the count since I purchased it last year. I’ve had one escape, from the trap falling off the table and the wire was bent enough for the bird to get out. I’m guessing a stray cat was the culprit. Setting the trap on the ground works better. When we get an accumulation of snow, it’s stored in the garage until the snow melts, then it’s back outside until the next snowfall. I’ve caught a few native birds and happily set them free. I have better luck using millet than cracked corn. I use a solution of bleach water to clean the trap and let that soak a few minutes, then rinse with the hose and let it dry thoroughly. They don’t seem to be enticed when it’s dirty. Using decoys helps to increase the numbers. Usually, there’s 2-5 Sparrows daily. Currently, I have 2 in the trap with other Sparrows outside of the trap. It’s a good feeling contributing to reducing their population even if the numbers are low. The way I see it, if one bird is trapped, I’ve prevented possibly 20 from being hatched. Thank you for creating the DRST!

Awesome solution

I’m a bird enthusiast, and I did not like seeing house sparrows at my feeder and nest boxes. So I did a little research, and discovered this trap. Did house sparrow halos before and while they work, they need to be used on everything to the point where things were looking unsightly. Day three of using white millet under their favorite bush, and I already humanely dispatched 27 of them. And they only started coming into the trap on day 2. I plan on keeping two revolving decoys with food and water in the trap, and tuck it in the shed to keep them safe at night. Still getting used to handling the emotions of dispatching them but if it means my titmice and other native birds will have less invasive birds causing nesting problems, I’m all for it. Some native birds got in on day one and start of day two, but since the house sparrows had their decoys, it seems to be only house sparrows who come to the cage, with the exception of one possibly desperate red finch that I had to save. I work from home so I can check the trap 2-3 times a day.

Works great

Bought it several years ago and started using it consistently on almost a daily basis. Using millet as bait, put it near a shrub that they like to congregate in at the corner of my house. I’ve caught 106 between 6/3/24 and 8/25/24.

Engineering!

Just received my sparrow trap. Came very quickly by the way. Put it out in the yard, today upon daylight will be the first time I check it. I built 5 tree swallow boxes, and all were inhabited. What a beautiful sight to have these little acrobats all around the yard❤️.

Checked the boxes and all babies in the boxes were dead! I saw the English Sparrows in the boxes. Not a Swallow, nowhere to be found anymore! I feel like I let them down. Well, on a mission to regain there trust and make my yard English Sparrow free!

Worked the first day.

Less than a day total deployed and the male, that drove off a bluebird pair, was in the trap.
